Character Development: Roughs.

Rough initial idea sketch for Ruff's ghost's design. Lots of bits that whisp out like smoke or mist.
Development of Ruff's ghost's design. This time in the style I'm leaning towards using for this project. When 'airborn' legs would merge into a sort of trailing tail that would end in his star. When on the ground visiting Rascal, he's basically just the same as his normal design, just faintly transparent and the tips of his tail and ears fade into wisps. I feel this gives him an otherworldly/ghostly appearance while not making him in any way scary for children.
More development of Rascal's design. In this case I took an actually reference photo of a raccoon and then using that pose reworked it into the style. In the blue thumbnail to the side you can see how all of his basic shapes are made of rounded circles - I think this really helps to keep him looking friendly and sort of almost cuddly toy-ish.
More sketch work to get a better feel of how the characters body shapes would work, again, focusing on keeping them rounded and soft but still instantly recognisable as the animals they are. Have had a couple of people mistaking Ruff for a cat, but I think his colour scheme (ie. red fox) will help with that issue.
