Development work: Style tests.
Inspired by some of the books I've been looking at for this project, I've been trying out a different style of digital illustration. In this case, working on a way to emulate the cut-out collage style.
The first attempt at working with this style, all elements are drawn with blocks of colour on multiple layers.
For this I wanted to try mixing this style of illustration with typography in the same general way I'm interested in using for the books illustrations/typography.
--------------------------------------------
I decided to take one image from the book, when Rascal sits on the rooftop and cries over the loss of his friend, and draw it out in both my normal style of illustration and then the cut out one, to help visualise which style would support the characters and story I want to tell better.
My normal style tend to consist of thick, elongated black lines with varied width (as the curve of the line dictates) and then bold, striking colours. In this case I also decided to test out adding a texture to the image. While I want to keep the use of colour in this book fairly simple, by using bright block colour rather then more shaded stuff, I am worried that doing so might leave some illustrations (where there might not be much action happening for example) slightly visually boring. I feel adding in the texture would give the illustrations a bit more character and life.

I then took the exact same page and re-drew it using the cut-out method I've been testing out. I tend to feel that this method suits the characters and feel I want for the book much better then my normal style. The simple use of colour tends to support the round shapes I'm using to draw these characters, as well as the use of bright, blocked out colour I want to use. It also tends to fit better with the hand rendered text I'm considering.
