The first couple of pages of the book are focused on introducing the characters to us, they're small, playful snapshots of their lives as the two friends play. I tried to add details to the simpler backgrounds to keep the interesting, but not so much that they take away from the focus on the characters interactions. The fifth page, where the ball rolls out into the road has levels of foreshadowing. Ruff is mostly un-alarmed by these events, although he's surprised at the ball getting away from him. Rascal however is already showing signs of distress, he does not enjoy the road.
This page was a difficult one to work out, the oncoming car needed to be present, but I didn't want it to dominate. Again Ruff is fairly carefree at this point, his body language still playful as he jumps after the ball. Rascal on the other hand is still showing signs of distress over this, almost shyly hidden in the bushes.
