Illustration Process:

I start by opening a new canvas in the digital art program Paint Tool Sai. I tend to use this program for my illustrations as it's ideal for creating the smooth, tapered lines I use. In this canvas I paste the scan of the pencil sketch from my mock-up.

I then place down the base layer (in this case the sky), and using the pen tool draw out the cloud swirls.

On another layer I place down the block that makes up the main background bush.

Behind this I add in the road and pavment in the background.

I then add in the front bush and details to both. On the same layer I add in the ball in the middle of the road.

At this point the backgrounds pretty much done and I start adding in the characters. The first is Rascal peeking out from behind the bush. He's drawn entirely on a single layer, using the magic select took to place down the block colours that make him up when needed. Ideally I'd use a number of layers to create him, but dude to the size of the image layer numbers and ram space become an issue.

On another layer I then add Ruff into the image, keeping his movements dynamic.
.
Behind Ruff's layer I draw in the car heading towards them.

On a final layer I added in the text for the page, having it follow the flow of the page.
