First Flight:
Fanelli, Sara. 2002, Jonathan Cape Ltd. 'First Flight'
First Flight is an interesting book about a butterfly attempting to learn to fly. What I like about it is the instantly eye catching use of mixed media collage for the illustrations and also, the way Fanelli has incorporated the text into this book.
Fanelli's incorporation of the text into the actual flow of the illustrations is interesting. I really enjoy the look the hand-rendered text bring to the piece, as well as the breaking up of sentences to create feeling present on the left hand side of the above image.
There's something of the uncanny in this style of illustration and while it's quite awesome to look at, I think it's probably not suited to the already slightly potentially uneasy story I wish to tell.
